This Info Session was framed as the remote meeting of the second year of the project and aimed at providing an overview of the EU Algae Initiative and present the EU4Algae support to its implementation by means of its tasks, but mainly, highlighted how EU4Algae members are contributing to the foreseen actions of the Initiative through the different Working Groups discussions and activities. The Session also focused on action 6 of the EU Algae Initiative, which aims to discuss market stimulating mechanisms: good practices and recommendations for addressing the sector’s needs. The event had more than 350 registrations and was attended by around 140 people.
Charlotte Jagot, Senior Project Advisor for Sustainable Blue Economy of the European Commission Climate, Infrastructure and Environmental Agency (CINEA) for the welcome address. The presentation entitled "A dynamic EU landscape for algae projects: recent developments and examples” provided an overview of the EU Green Deal framework, which is supported by the programmes implemented by CINEA, in view of promoting a clean circular economy, restoring biodiversity, cutting pollution, and achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Currently CINEA is managing > 58 billion for the period 2021-2027.
Maris Stulgis, from DG MARE Blue Economy, Aquaculture and Maritime Spatial Planning unit informed that to unlock the potential of the European algae sector, the European Commission has adopted on 15 November a cross-cutting EU Algae Initiative with 23 actions. The initiative aims to support upscaling regenerative algae cultivation and production throughout the EU, and the development and mainstreaming the markets for food and non-food algae applications. The implementation of these 23 actions is coordinated with MS, the industry (EU4Algae: a key support) and other relevant stakeholders.
