EU4Algae continues to be a vital information hub, bringing together the latest breakthroughs, events, and resources for stakeholders dedicated to advancing algae-based solutions.  

 

In this third edition of Digest Stories, we aim to showcase algae innovations addressing sustainability challenges and driving economic growth in the Agrifood, Cleantech, and Bioenergy sectors. Each of these pioneering companies exemplifies how algae technologies contribute to more sustainable solutions.

 

Sunlight conversion additives for enhancing sustainable algae production

CASCADE, a French company specializing in sunlight conversion additives, accelerates greenhouse crop growth, including algae and microalgae, supporting sustainable agriculture. Through its innovative LIGHT CASCADE technology, which manipulates light propagation within materials, the company has achieved notable results in algae and microalgae production in collaboration with the CEA Cadarache research laboratory showing positive results on the growth of spirulina or chlorella. This versatile technology, adaptable to many applications involving light, has already shown promise in multiple fields explored or identified in the laboratory. Research confirms that algae and microalgae are promising markets for the LIGHT CASCADE technology.

Water treatment and microalgae biomass for sustainable agriculture

PlanctoPolis, a French company, has developed an innovative approach to treating wastewater rich in nitrogen and phosphorus by using microalgae-based cleantech. This cultivation process, conducted in flat photobioreactors, maximises microalgae biomass yield while addressing environmental challenges such as water pollution and CO2 capture. The resulting biomass serves as both a biostimulant and animal nutrition, with adaptability to various applications. Through its sustainable, circular, and regenerative business model, PlanctoPolis aims to contribute to preserving water resources and supporting biodiversity.

Producing sustainable biomass for biofuels from farmed algae

SeaH4, a South African company, cultivates seaweed in desert-adjacent ponds to produce biomass for biogas, which is further refined into carbon-neutral fuels like LNG and methanol. By partnering with green hydrogen producers nearby, SeaH4 synthesizes e-methanol through a process that combines captured CO2 and hydrogen, creating a stable, transportable fuel source with high energy density. These fuels are compatible with current shipping engines, and SeaH4 can also produce sustainable aviation fuels and e-diesel when needed. SeaH4’s operations have a carbon-neutralisation potential of up to 3 gigatons annually.
