Customise your maps with the new ‘My Notes’ tool!

Do you wish you could annotate maps in the European Atlas of the Seas? Great news, the Atlas team has released a new tool – ‘My Notes’ – that allows you to do this!

You can, for example, add text to your map.

New developments are in full swing for the Atlas. Following the release of the ‘My Locations’ tool that allows you to create your own maps showing self-selected locations, a new tool is now available. The ‘My Notes’ tool allows you to add text, lines, polygons and locations to your maps as well as circle items you wish to highlight in your map. Of course, you can combine the ‘My Locations’ tool and the ‘My Notes’ tool to create a map with your locations and your annotations!

How does it work?

To start using the ‘My Notes’ tool, simply log in to the European Atlas of the Seas and enable the tool in the advanced parameters, available in the ‘Home’ menu. Make sure that you also enable the ‘Save map’ tool.

Activate the tools under 'Advanced features'

Then, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the icon representing a note at the right-hand side of the screen and select the feature you would like to use (e.g. text or a circle);
  2. Click in the area of the map where you would like to add the selected feature;
  3. Adapt the text or the other selected feature as needed (you can change the size and the colour of the feature and draw a polygon by drawing lines and double clicking when you are finished);
  4. Do not forget to save your annotated map by clicking on the icon representing a disc!

Saving your map allows you to store it for future use and updates within the MyMaps section of the Atlas!

For a step-by-step guide on how to use the ‘My Notes’ tool, visit the ‘Do you need help?’ section available in the ‘Home’ menu of the Atlas and select ‘Create and manage your own map notes’.

Why use ‘My Notes’?

You can use ‘My Notes’ for multiple purposes. For example,

  • If you are a teacher, you can use it to prepare a lesson for your students;
  • You can create an annotated map for a presentation or a report;
  • You can use your saved map to prepare or show progress on a project;
  • And much more!

Your saved maps are not publicly available in the Atlas as they are stored in your personal working area behind login. However, if you wish to share your map with others, you can share the link (url) to your map with them.
