The was launched during the on 11 January 2021. The High Ambition Coalition (HAC) for Nature and People is an intergovernmental group of more than 45 countries championing a global deal for nature and people that can halt the accelerating loss of species and protect vital ecosystems that are the source of our economic security.
On this occasion, European Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius joined the . He pointed out the European Union (EU)’s commitment to protect at least 30% of its land and seas by 2030. This is at the heart of the EU Biodiversity Strategy. Strong commitment has also been made on nature restoration and to enabling transformative change across sectors of the economy. Furthermore, the Commissioner explained that the EU is committed to undertake all efforts to adopt the common transformative and ambitious at the next , COP15. He also underlined that the biodiversity and the climate change crises are interlinked as are many of the solutions. He concluded that there is an opportunity to rebuild a better world.
Four key themes were addressed at the online which brought together heads of state and government as well as leaders of international organizations, financial institutions, the business sector and NGOs:
- The protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems;
- The promotion of agro-ecology;
- The mobilization of funding for biodiversity; and
- The link between deforestation, species and human health.
