Citizen of the Ocean - a Youth-led World Forum

The Ocean We Need for the Future We Want - Youth Empowerment for Ocean Action and Sustainability

With the synergies between the initiatives Mission Ocean: Restore our Ocean and Waters, the Sustainable Development Goal 14 “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development” and the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the ocean is at a truly crossroads like never before on the international agenda.

The Youth4Ocean Forum and partner organisations, are calling for ocean enthusiasts and champions 18-30 y.o. (activists, scientists, artists, educators, entrepreneurs, sportspeople...) from all over the world to take part in five series of globally connected regional online workshops “24 hours for the ocean” in 2024 to:

  • Draw up their priorities for sustainable and equitable ocean,
  • Make an inventory of effective and innovative ocean-based solutions,
  • Design content of the Ocean Citizen networking tool for mobilising a community of practice.

The workshops will address the Ocean Decade Challenges of the United Nations Organisation and will be live streamed from Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.

The most motivated workshop participants will be selected to:

  • Attend the Ocean Citizen Summit in spring 2025 at Nausicaá, France where they will finalise the Ocean Citizen Charter, test and validate the Ocean Citizen digital tool, be trained in ocean advocacy and communications to promote the charter and the digital tool at international events and prepare for high level events such as the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference.
  • Attend the United Nations Ocean Conference (in June 2025) and other to present the results of the Citizen of the Ocean Forum in Nice, France. They will host side events, advocate and engage with stakeholders.

The travel and subsistence costs of the selected participants will be paid.

Applicants will be evaluated in terms of their age eligibility, motivation, commitment, availability. 100 participants from all continents will be chosen for the Citizen of the Ocean Youth-led Forum. The selection process will ensure inclusion and diversity of participants in terms of occupation, residence, nationality, field and levels of education, interests, and gender.
