Are "point clouds" the way to go with bathymetric data?

the third phase of EMODnet should allow"multiple resolution" - ie. high resolution where the underling data permit it and lower resolution elsewhere

a point cloud is a set of data points in some coordinate system. In a three-dimensional coordinate system, these points are usually defined by X, Y, and Z coordinates, and often are intended to represent the external surface of an object. is the way to go for EMODnet?
