Workshop on Navigating the Energy Transition - Strategic Goals for a Resilient and Sustainable Inland and Offshore Aquaculture

The Energy Transition Partnership (ETP) for the EU fisheries and aquaculture sector, under the European Commission (DG MARE), hosted a new workshop focusing on the energy transition and decarbonisation of Inland and Offshore Aquaculture, involving representatives and stakeholder from the two key sectors on 19 February 2025.

The hybrid event brought together over 130 participants from 24 countries, representing diverse stakeholders such as public authorities, industry representatives, academic institutions, fisheries companies, NGOs, and key EU bodies.

Key takeaways from the workshop:

  1. Focus on regulatory flexibility and infrastructure development – creating a more adaptable legal framework and integrating renewable energy sources.
  2. Adoption of innovative technologies – advancing technological solutions like hybrid energy systems and electric boats.
  3. Training and capacity building – equipping stakeholders with the necessary knowledge on energy efficiency, optimization, and technologies.
  4. Collaboration and financial support – fostering partnerships and securing financial incentives, especially for smaller producers and pilot projects.
  5. Creating a long-term vision for sustainability – establishing clear strategic goals for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
