Vattenfall is exploring how offshore wind farms can serve multiple purposes beyond producing fossil-free electricity. Through its WIN@sea project, the company investigates how wind farms can support food production and environmental monitoring.

The Wind Farmed Seaweed Snacks are made from seaweed grown at Vesterhav Syd, a Danish wind farm, where lines between turbines foster seaweed growth. This seaweed helps regenerate the marine environment by absorbing carbon dioxide and excess nutrients, and can be processed for various purposes, including food.

To share this initiative widely, Vattenfall collaborated with actor Samuel L. Jackson, a former marine biology student and passionate advocate for ocean health. You can watch the official full campaign video to see the collaboration in action. Jackson emphasises the project’s broader impact: “These offshore wind farms aren’t just producing fossil-free electricity, they also create a habitat for sea life to grow. For example, seaweed is a food that can help regenerate the marine environment. That’s next-level thinking.”

Although not commercially available, a limited number of Wind Farmed Seaweed Snacks have been produced to illustrate the potential of sustainable energy and food production working hand in hand. Helle Herk-Hansen, Vattenfall’s Head of Environment, highlights the initiative’s aim to innovate while coexisting with nature.

As for taste, Jackson describes the snacks as “salty and tasty,” but stresses that the project is about rethinking energy infrastructure’s role in the environment — a true game-changer.
