Background :
This session formed the closing segment of the European Maritime Day (EMD) 2026, held on 21–22 May 2026 in Limassol, Cyprus. Dedicated to the energy transition for EU fisheries and aquaculture, it brought together the Energy Transition Partnership (ETP) community, DG MARE, national ambassadors, and innovators from across Europe to take stock of progress and showcase concrete solutions. The session combined three complementary parts: an update from DG MARE on the state of play of the energy transition work and the forthcoming EU Energy Transition Roadmap; the official launch of the ETP Pilot Ambassador Programme; and the first edition of the ETP Champions supported by Blue Invest, recognising pioneering, market-ready solutions and culminating in a live pitching competition and award ceremony. It took place against a backdrop of renewed energy price volatility driven by geopolitical instability, which has sharply increased operating costs across the fleet and given fresh momentum to the energy transition as both an environmental and an economic priority.
Session objectives:
The session aimed to:
- Update stakeholders on the progress of the ETP and the development of the EU Energy Transition Roadmap, to be delivered as part of the Vision 2040 for fisheries and aquaculture.
- Officially launch the ETP Pilot Ambassador Programme and present its objectives, structure and first cohort of national ambassadors.
- Recognise and celebrate the first edition of the ETP Champions, spotlighting innovative solutions to accelerate their uptake, investment and replication across the EU fleet and aquaculture operations.
