In response to the EC request for service under the Framework Contract CINEA/2021/OP/0011 “Inter-institutional Multiple Framework Contract for supporting better regulation-related activities, with reopening of competition, Lot 2 - Sustainable Blue economy and ocean affairs”, the current study maps out low-carbon energy innovations and efficiency solutions; analyses current energy use; associated CO2e emissions; the cost to reduce them; and the viability of decarbonisation technologies. It identifies potential solutions for each sector, assesses their financial viability and provides recommendations for overcoming barriers to implementation. The study focuses on the fisheries and aquaculture sector, dealing with the specificities of each sector by providing separate analysis and recommendations, but also identifying the potential synergies between the two.

The Commission's communication aims to guide fisheries and aquaculture activities towards reducing its carbon footprint and energy dependence. The package emphasizes reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving carbon climate neutrality by 2050.

This study aims to be the first of a series supporting the implementation of the communication.

This study has been released at the 2nd Workshop on Financing the Energy Transition for Fishery and Aquaculture, which took place in Brussels on the 28th February under the Energy Transition Partnership.
