The Insider’s Perspective series shines a spotlight on the innovative and cutting-edge stakeholders shaping the algae sector’s future. In this twenty-seventh edition, we highlight I3-4-Seaweed, an interregional European collaborative project dedicated to strengthening and scaling the EU seaweed (macroalgae) sector. By helping innovations move from development to real market uptake, the initiative supports seaweed SMEs and value-chain actors with practical tools, demonstration support, and business acceleration. Discover how the I3-4-Seaweed project is addressing key barriers such as reliable biomass supply, efficient cultivation, quality characterisation, and scalable processing pathways, while playing a pivotal role in advancing a resilient and competitive European seaweed industry.
I3-4-Seaweed: Connecting Regions to Scale Seaweed Innovation
I3-4-Seaweed brings together 16 organisations across six EU Member States to accelerate the deployment of market-ready seaweed solutions in Europe. The initiative focuses on connecting regions, infrastructure, knowledge, and companies to ensure that seaweed can be produced more reliably and utilised across a wide range of applications.
By targeting multiple barriers to growth simultaneously, the project supports the transition from innovation to commercialisation. Its integrated approach strengthens the European seaweed value chain, enabling SMEs and other stakeholders to de-risk scaling activities and enhance their market readiness.
Driving Innovation from Cultivation to Biorefinery
A core objective of I3-4-Seaweed is to foster innovation across both upstream and downstream segments of the seaweed value chain.
Upstream, the project supports:
- Cultivation improvements
- Enhanced hatchery reliability
- Digital monitoring and “Aquaculture 4.0” approaches
These efforts aim to increase operational efficiency and ensure a more consistent and reliable biomass supply.
Downstream, I3-4-Seaweed promotes:
- Advanced processing and biorefinery approaches
- The development of higher-value applications, including ingredients and bio-based products
A key mechanism enabling these innovations is the Open Call / cascade funding, which provides financial support and acceleration services to SMEs and start-ups. This support allows companies to test, validate, and scale their solutions, bridging the gap between development and market uptake.
Strengthening the European Seaweed Value Chain
By addressing critical bottlenecks such as biomass availability, operational efficiency, quality characterisation, and processing capacity, I3-4-Seaweed contributes to a more robust and competitive European seaweed sector. The initiative’s focus on practical tools and demonstration support helps reduce the risks associated with scaling and commercialisation, empowering SMEs and value-chain actors to bring innovative products to market.
Through its interregional collaboration, the project also facilitates knowledge exchange and the transfer of best practices, enabling more regions to participate in and benefit from the growing algae economy.
How EU4Algae Supports Coordination and Growth
EU4Algae plays a vital role in supporting initiatives such as I3-4-Seaweed by fostering collaboration and enhancing the visibility of algae-related activities across Europe. The platform is particularly valuable in addressing the fragmentation of the sector by:
- Connecting stakeholders from industry, research, and public authorities around shared bottlenecks and priorities
- Improving coordination and visibility of algae initiatives across European regions
- Creating a shared space for exchange, including education, business support, and market uptake opportunities through tools such as the EU4Algae Knowledge Library, to which I3-4-Seaweed contributes
This coordinated approach strengthens the overall ecosystem and accelerates the development of a thriving European algae sector.
Unlocking the Full Potential of Algae in the EU
From the project’s perspective, several key needs remain to fully realise the potential of algae in Europe:
- Reliable scaling of biomass supply, including stronger hatchery capacity and consistent seeded material
- Higher operational efficiency and de-risking, supported by improved digital tools for cultivation and monitoring
- Standardised quality and characterisation, enabling buyers to specify and trust seaweed inputs across markets
- Transferable processing and biorefinery models, allowing more regions to convert biomass into competitive products
- Increased scale-up funding and acceleration pathways, bridging the gap between demonstration and long-term market demand
Addressing these priorities will be essential to ensuring the sustainable growth and competitiveness of the European seaweed industry.
