EU4Algae remains a vital information source, bringing together the latest breakthroughs, events, and resources for stakeholders dedicated to advancing algae-based solutions.

European seaweed farming remains in its early stages, with the sector still navigating challenges across the entire value chain. Despite this, seaweed is increasingly recognised both in Europe and globally for its vital role in regenerative aquaculture, as well as its contribution to numerous UN Sustainable Development Goals. As interest grows, so does the need to strengthen the foundations of seaweed cultivation.

One of the most pressing challenges facing industry today is the high cost of production. As observed across terrestrial agriculture, increasing crop productivity is key—and seaweed is no exception. Enhancing productivity through the improved utilisation of genetic resources and focused strain development offers significant potential to advance the sector.

To support this progress, the EU-funded projects Blue Bio Boost and SeaMark are hosting the online workshop Future of European Seaweed Breeding on 28 November 2025, from 10:00 to 12:00 CET. Participants will gain insights into the latest efforts in strain selection for Saccharina and Ulva, take part in in-depth stakeholder discussions, and explore emerging approaches to seaweed breeding in Europe.

This workshop presents a valuable opportunity for researchers, industry members, and stakeholders interested in the future of seaweed cultivation and the scientific advances shaping it.
