The OPTIPROT Network has released PROTEINS, a new comic book designed to bring the fascinating world of omics sciences closer to the public. Officially launched during a virtual event on 28 April, the comic creatively blends science, storytelling, and art to highlight the importance of proteins in both human nutrition and environmental sustainability – including alternative sources like algae.
The first edition of PROTEINS is available in Spanish, with an English language version expected to follow.
The online launch event was hosted at the ANFACO-CECOPESCA facilities, featuring a special appearance by illustrator and comic book author Xulia Pisón. Following an informal book signing, Pisón had the chance to explore some of the very proteins that inspired her latest visual work. The webinar offered a behind-the-scenes look at her creative process, showcasing how complex scientific concepts can be transformed into engaging visual narratives. Her presentation demonstrated how the fusion of science and art can effectively spark curiosity and promote knowledge among wider audiences.
The event also included an overview of the OPTIPROT Network’s mission, followed by insights from representatives of several food-sector companies working in omics sciences. Their reflections highlighted the value of using creative formats – such as comics – to communicate scientific topics in ways that are both clear and compelling.
A Comic About Proteins – and Planet-Friendly Food Futures
PROTEINS is an educational comic that explains the role of proteins in our diets and their relevance to planetary health. Designed to be entertaining and accessible, it introduces readers to both traditional and emerging protein sources – including algae, microbial proteins, and insects – through a cast of relatable characters. These characters collaborate across the story to explore how different proteins can work together toward a common goal: feeding the population in a sustainable and healthy way.
The comic also introduces readers to the science behind omics technologies and how these tools can support a more responsible approach to food systems. Backed by scientific guidance from the OPTIPROT Network and brought to life through Pisón’s dynamic illustrations, PROTEINS is ideal for readers of all ages – especially families, youth, and anyone interested in food, science, and sustainability.
From Algae to Comics – A Creative Continuum
Illustrator Xulia Pisón is no stranger to science-inspired storytelling. She was previously featured in the EU4Algae Interview Spotlight series, where she shared more about her passion for using comics to promote ocean literacy and algae awareness. Readers interested in learning more about Pisón’s work and her creative journey can revisit that interview for further insights into her approach to fusing art and environmental science.
Ready to Dive In?
The PROTEINS comic is now available for download – starting with its first edition in Spanish – offering a fresh, visual way to explore the world of proteins and sustainable food solutions.
