We present a free app for mobile phones, with a digital itinerary about the Portuguese Maritime Discoveries. This itinerary includes different spaces of action within the city of Lisbon: monuments, historical places, museums associated with the maritime discoveries (an aquarium, a planetarium, the museum of the Orient) and the exchange of cultures. With this project we intend to promote not only the Portuguese maritime identity, but also the connection with and respect of the sea to every citizen (Ocean Literacy principles 5 and 6). To achieve these goals, we created a set of “exploration stations” related to the following dimensions:
- "The city in the time of the discoveries" - aspects related to the history associated with the period of the discoveries;
- "A city of peoples and cultures" - aspects related to cultural diversity and exchanges associated with the maritime journeys;
- "From land to the sea" - aspects related to navigation and orientation by the stars;
- "Monsters and other sea life" - aspects related to marine biodiversity in the different oceans explored by the Portuguese sailors.
These itineraries are adapted to school children (10 to 12 years) and can be explored in school or in family contexts.
The project (PT02_2ºRPS_0017) was funded by EEA-Grants (Direção-Geral de Política do Mar).
