The National Research Council of Italy (CNR: https://www.cnr.it/) is a public research body whose mission is to carry out, promote, spread, transfer and improve research activities in the main sectors of knowledge growth and of its applications for the scientific, technological, economic and social development of the Country (Italy). The Scientific network of CNR is organized in 7 Departments and 102 Research Institutes for a total of 8400 paid staff members and around 4000 post-docs. The Institute of Marine Sciences of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR-ISMAR: http://www.ismar.cnr.it/) is one of the three CNR institute dealing with marine sciences. It is the most multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary one by carrying out research in polar, oceanic and Mediterranean areas in order to study: i) the geological evolution of the oceans and continental margins to define the activity of volcanoes, faults and underwater landslides and the impact scenarios on the coasts; ii) the influence of present and past climate change on ocean circulation, acidification, bio-geochemical cycles and productivity of the seas; iii) the natural and anthropic factors that impact economically and socially on coastal as well as on shelf and deep marine ecosystems from prehistory to industrial times. The CNR-ISMAR headquarters are located in Venice and sections are located in Bologna, Lerici (SP), Trieste, Rome and Naples.CNR-ISMAR also developed a long experience in scientific dissemination projects, environmental education and awareness raising activities/events on marine topics.
