The World Ocean Network (WON) is an international non-profit organisation mobilised during the International Year of the Ocean in 1998 under the aegis of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. It was officially set up in 2006. The World Ocean Network assembles about 350 organizations worldwide, out of which 70-80 are in Europe: aquaria, zoos, educational organizations, science centers, natural history museums, media, and NGOs. They reach millions of people every year. WON promotes the BLUE SOCIETY, a vision based on the idea that many societal needs and challenges can be met by responsible management of marine resources and ecosystem services, development of innovative technologies and products generating employment and economic resources.
