Ciência Viva is the Portuguese agency to promote scientific and technologic culture, in collaboration with the scientific community. It supports science education projects in schools, organizes campaigns of science dissemination and engages with the public through a network of science centres across the country, in particular the Pavilion of Knowledge – Ciência viva Centre, in Lisbon. Ciência Viva has set up a national network of science clubs in collaboration with the Ciência Viva science centres and with the Portuguese Ministry of Education. It is also involved in delivering special programmes for educational success supported by the Ministry of Education and municipalities.Ocean literacy has always been one of the central topics for education and engagement at Ciência Viva and it has been the first European country to adapt the USA ocean literacy framework to its national context. Ciência Viva has participated in several EU funded projects including ocean literacy among its objectives, mainly Sea for Society (FP7), and H2020 Sea Change, AORA- CSA and AANChOR- CSA, presently being developed.Formally Ciência Viva is an association of research laboratories, the national Foundation for Science and Technology and the national Innovation Agency.
