The MAP/Barcelona Convention is a UN multilateral environmental agreement that provides the context in which the 21 coastal countries of the Mediterranean and the EU cooperate for the protection of the marine and coastal environment of the Mediterranean, as a contribution to the sustainable development of the region. The execution of the mandate and programmes of the MAP-Barcelona Convention system is structured around seven Protocols and driven by environmental assessments developed over more than 40 years of collective work with Contracting Parties and Partners, in the framework of a robust and mature institutional, legal and operational framework.
