The project “Journey to Coastal Life – Blue Without Waste” connects cultural heritage, science, and community action to raise awareness about ocean health and sustainable living. Students learn that the ocean is not only a source of life but also a reflection of human responsibility.
The journey begins at the Elaeussa Sebaste Ancient City, where students explore maritime culture and discover how ancient civilizations lived in harmony with the sea. This experience helps them understand that respect for the ocean has been part of human history for thousands of years.
Next, students visit the Middle East Technical University (METU) Institute of Marine Sciences to learn about marine pollution, microplastics, and biodiversity. They collect data during a coastal cleanup campaign, analyze their findings using STEM methods, and present the results through graphs, infographics, and digital posters.
Throughout the year, students organize creative and social events such as the Blue Awareness Week, Plastic-Free Campaign, and Second-Hand Blue Market. These activities encourage responsible consumption, recycling, and solidarity—linking small daily choices with global ocean sustainability.
Partnerships with local institutions strengthen the project’s scientific and social dimension. Integration with Eco-Schools actions (water footprint studies, biodiversity mapping, and climate awareness) ensures continuity in sustainability education.
By blending heritage, science, and civic engagement, Journey to Coastal Life – Blue Without Waste empowers students to become “Blue Citizens” who understand that a clean and healthy ocean begins with knowledge, respect, and collective action.
