Description of the project “Facing the sea”
This project aims to bring the school’s students closer to our local beaches and coastal area. Escoles Freta is located less than 300 meters from the beach in Calella.
In tourist towns like Calella, the beaches and the sea are generally considered a space for leisure and recreation. The students will learn about the wealth of our natural resources, both the terrestrial richness of the coastal beaches and the underwater area of a space that is close by and at the same time, unfamiliar.
The activities carried out in the project are eminently practical. We go to the beach in Calella to carry them out and to take samples which will later be analyzed in the laboratory. We also use a boat which is based in Arenys de Mar to make trips out to the open sea to measure oceanographic parameters with the students and to fish for plankton.
The water
Laboratory: Differences in water density due to temperature and salinity.
Measurements of sea water temperature in Calella throughout the course.
Differences in water density due to temperature and salinity and study of the thermocline.
Construction of a Secchi disk and transparency measurements.
Laboratory: Simulation of convection currents from water masses of different density.
The beaches
Trip to the beach: Analysis of the sand, width and profile of the beach. Typical beach plants, seabirds, beach detritus and use of dichotomous keys for the classification of detritus found on the beach.
Plankton
Acquisition of plankton samples from those taken on the boat trip and observation and identification of species.
