The association was founded in 2004 on the basis of the positive experience acquired through the Seam project, supported by the European Commission and of the Italian Minister of the Environment, who gave rise to the network made up of 188 partners belonging to 38 different countries, representatives of cultural institutions, NGOs, non-governmental agencies, study centers, research institutes, universities. In 2008, the Veneto Region became a founding member with a regional law unanimously approved and, today, the association counts 239 partners in 39 different countries in the Euro-Mediterranean area and the Black Sea. Fispmed, with an international coordination technical secretariat based in Venice, 4 regional secretariats on the macro areas of reference and a scientific committee, gives priority to environmental issues and those related to sustainable development in the geographical basin of reference that is the Mediterranean-Black Sea. Activities and projects are carried out also though the working tool of the Euro-Mediterranean Black Sea Observatory, recognized by law 234, art. 1 paragraph 976 of 30 December 2021.
