The first Mediterranean Regenerative Aquaculture Centre, scheduled to open by the end of 2024 in La Rapita, Catalonia, Spain, is a collaborative effort between the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Generalitat de Catalunya, Departament d’Acció Climàtica, Alimentació i Agenda Rural (DACC). It also counts with the support and infrastructures provided by the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA). This pioneering initiative aims to highlight the importance of restorative aquaculture for Blue Transformation in the region and revolutionise aquaculture practices while promoting sustainability and resilience against climate change.
Regenerative aquaculture not only supports food security and economic development but also enhances ecosystem services. This approach includes activities such as farming algae, sea urchins, bivalves, and integrated multitrophic aquaculture systems. Among these, the Mediterranean Restorative Aquaculture Centre will enable innovation and capacity building in the region on the farming of macroalgae, which is currently underdeveloped in the Mediterranean.
The centre will serve as a hub for research, development, and knowledge exchange, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to foster innovation. It aims to help local communities and businesses in adopting sustainable aquaculture practices by combining traditional knowledge with cutting-edge technology. This initiative is aligned with the FAO's Blue Transformation vision, which seeks to expand aquaculture production in a way that benefits both society and the environment.
The centre’s focus on climate-resilient aquaculture is part of a broader strategy under the GFCM 2030 Strategy, which emphasizes developing regional climate adaptation plans. Ultimately, the Mediterranean Restorative Aquaculture Centre represents a pivotal step towards sustainable aquaculture in the region. By fostering the cultivation of species like macroalgae and promoting regenerative practices, the centre aims to rejuvenate marine ecosystems, enhance food security, and create economic opportunities – not only addressing immediate environmental challenges but also setting a foundation for a resilient and sustainable future in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions.
