9.00 | Data Needs for Coastal Protection | Large-scale coastal maintenance with sand; Experiences and experiments in The Netherlands. The Dutch coast has been maintained successfully with yearly beach and shoreface nourishments since 1990. The search for optimization of volume and frequency of nourishments leads to larger scale designs, including the 20 million m3 'sand engine' which is being constructed right now. These experiments ask for specific monitoring of the morphodynamics of these areas. Ad van der Spek, Deltares |
9.45 | The Atlantic Fernando Veloso-Gomes Shoreline mobility and erosion are important scientific, technical and management issues to take into consideration along almost all the European costal regions facing the Atlantic. Wave and tidal action dominate the extremely diverse nature of the coast and this represents a challenge when compared with other European coasts. The natural and the anthropogenic forcing has evolved into several high risk situations for urban settlements and economic activities. Regional and local data is essential for the assessment of the main causes of shore mobility and coastal erosion, for predictive modeling and adaptative management and prevention of the risks.
10.30 | coffee | |
11.00 | The Mediterranean Interactions in the coastal areas at the local and transnational scale in a changing environment: surface waters and the subterranean estuary, sediment fluxes, erosion and transport processes, stability of the coasts Luca Zaggia, CNR-ISMAR
11.45 | English National Network of Strategic Regional Cosatal Monitoring programme. Cherith Moses The Strategic Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme started in SE England and is now being extended around the coastline. It is designed to provide a consistent regional approach to coastal process monitoring, providing information for development of strategic shoreline management plans, coastal defence strategies and operational management of coastal protection and flood defence. The programme is managed on behalf of the Coastal Groups of the Southeast of England and is funded by DEFRA, in partnership with local Authorities of the southeast of England and the Environment Agency.
