The Network of European Blue Schools Workshop: Embarking on a journey for Ocean Literacy

The Network of European Blue Schools is about to start, inspiring schools, students and teachers find their blue link to the ocean. If you want to go aboard please fill the Pledge.

Ocean literate children will be responsible adults.

In this workshop teachers shared experiences in Ocean Literacy, identified drivers and pre-conditions for success of the Network of European Blue Schools and decided which key areas they want to work in the future.

The European Blue School Network was presented by Carla Lourenço, Ciência Viva, and the handbook, that will assist teachers and students to find a blue link to the ocean, and the certification process were presented, by Evy Copejans, EMSEA.

As the European Blue Schools label builds on inspiring examples collected all over Europe, 5 teachers from different regional contexts, from coastal to landlock European countries, and levels of education, shared inspiring projects and practices.

The workshop participants had the opportunity to contribute to 3 polls whose results will help to define the forthcoming teacher development courses to support teachers to co-create projects with their students and become a Blue School.

A roundtable to discuss synergies and future collaborations with other European education initiatives took place and had the participation of Andrée-Anne Marsan, EMODNET, the European Atlas of the Sea; Agueda Gras-Velazquez, European Schoolnet; Marc Wilikens, Joint Research Center (JRC) – European Commission and Vladimir Garkov, Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture (DG EAC) and was facilitated by Ana Noronha, Ciência Viva,

The workshop was attended by 128 people from European counties and abroad like Canada, Nigeria and South Africa, bringing in an Atlantic flavour. We had the pleasure of being able to count on Nicola Bridge, Ocean Conservation Trust and EMSEA president, as moderator of the workshop.
