Description
The EU4Ocean Coalition organised the “Let’s listen to the Arctic Ocean” event series, supported by the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission.
The aim of the event was to give visibility to all relevant Arctic Ocean related communities, including schools and pupils, teachers, marine science educators, stakeholders from marine-related sectors, NGOs, youth, policy-makers and government representatives, public institutions, researchers and academia, conservationists, entrepreneurs, other ocean professionals as well as general citizens.
Three virtual events on the 5th of April provided insights into Arctic Ocean literacy activities and included active exchanges of these communities.
- The first element gave practical examples of improving Arctic Ocean Literacy within (and outside of) the EU. Members of the network showcased and discussed ongoing activities of the EU4Ocean coalition and its communities in the Arctic Ocean. It also included a live exchange on the “If Oceans Could Speak” Podcast, sharing experiences and challenges.
- The second element focused on schools, teachers and marine science educators. It offered examples of engaging Arctic education materials and practices in schools, and space to exchange on the challenges that educators are facing in bringing knowledge about the Arctic to their audiences. This workshop linked educators with existing solutions for their issues and creates contacts to solve ongoing challenges.
- The third element created a space for exchange of youths from the Youth4Ocean community with youth from across the EU, also allowing to highlight the work of Young Ocean Advocates.
The conclusion of the event took place on the 8th of April. This tied the discussions and outcomes of all three previous elements together. Linking the results of these discussions provides the ground to develop solutions across the involved communities.
