Join us in celebration of ocean literacy in Europe in a fun and creative way!

Supported by the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission, the EU4Ocean Coalition is organizing the Ocean Literacy Festival, which will showcase ocean literacy initiatives and activities from EU4Ocean members, and anyone who is active in ocean literacy across Europe.

This Ocean literacy festival will take place following the EU4Ocean coalition Ocean Literacy Summit - ‘Let’s Make Europe Blue!’ at the EU Maritime Day conference (19-20 May), and will be part of its SeaSide festivalin Ravenna (21-22 May).

What to expect?

The overall aim of the Ocean Literacy Festival is to connect ocean literacy actors from Europe, and to showcase the wide diversity of ocean literacy initiatives already in place. It will combine on-site events (in Ravenna, Italy) but also hybrid events organised in different locations across Europe and the various sea-basins (which will then be broadcasted online).

Its rich and diverse programme will ensure that you find something that responds to your interests, whether you are a student, a young changemaker, a parent or grandparent, a teacher, a marine science educator, a researcher, an elected representative, a policy maker or a marine professional!

Activities range from art exhibitions, musical events, children’s games, quizzes, beach clean-ups, and much more!

Lectures on the basics of ocean circulation and safety remarks

The objectives of this event are to bring up interest in the ocean circulation to high-school students and to educate them with the safety and environmental issues related to water activities and microplastics.

Ocean Chain

On may 19th, 2022, Blue School Portugal is challenging all Blue Schools to join hands and create a human chain for the Ocean that brings together students, teachers, families, partners, and local communities. We are challenging all Blue Schools to create and manage their own Ocean Chains, following these guidelines:

• Each school must create its Ocean Chain on May 19, 2022
• The human chain must be completed near the sea or, if that represents an impossible task, near a symbolic place for everyone involved (near a river, in the school, in an emblematic place for the community, etc.)
• Involve as many students as possible and of different ages
• Don't settle for the school community. Try to involve the local community and partners
• Share your Ocean Chain on social media. Make videos, take photos, use Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter or TikTok. Always with #BlueSchool and #OceanChain

"Blue Horizon: youths for the Ocean" travel podcast

Blue Horizon is a web radio show produced at POLI.RADIO, the non-profit cultural association managing the radio station of the Polytechnic University of Milan. The goal of the initiative is to raise awareness of topics and challenges related to the ocean and Blue Economy reducing the distance between the general public and the experts working in the ocean related sectors. Blue Horizon acts within the Ocean Literacy context and the main message that conveys is that blue economy, besides being a policy strategy, represents a way to live, work and see the future in a sustainable way. The final goals of our event are:

1. Raising awareness of the ocean.
2. Stressing the attention on the key role young generations within the Ocean Decade; the importance of a creative and catchy scientific dissemination; digital culture and education.
3. Supporting and promoting the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the initiatives of IOC-UNESCO. 4. Entertaining the audience.

The proposal consists in engaging the audience in listening to a 60 minutes’ podcast of Blue Horizon. The podcast is the recording of the live episode Blue Horizon is producing on the 17th of May in collaboration with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO), that manages the Italian platform of the “United Nation Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development” called Decennio del Mare. The title of the episode is “Blue Horizon: youths for the Ocean” and the two following projects carried out under the umbrella of Decennio del Mare will be presented through interviews to IOC-UNESCO consultants: “Favole Blu” (an educational project for children consisting in fairy-tales inspired by marine scientific papers), and “Save the Wave App Challenge” (gaming and engagement project for high school students aimed at programming apps to make known the ocean to the local communities). Our podcast includes musical breaks, that is a distinctive element compared to common podcasts. Music is powerful, it can strengthen the messages spread by interviewees and brings originality to the podcast giving the audience the chance to chill, refreshing the mind and restarting the attention. The podcast can be listened anywhere and any time (is available there "forever") so the participants of the festival can listen to it, for example, when travelling back home from Ravenna.

Study the Marine Litter dispersion: Citizen Science Application case (ML-CSA)

Objective of this event is to investigate the effects of marine currents, winds and river discharge on ML dispersion in the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Sea; help students achieve comprehension on the hazards of plastic pollution on the marine ecosystem; principle n.6 : Ocean and humans are inextricably interconnected; the project is addressed to the entire citizen, coastal and inland, focusing on the increased awareness it can produce. Pupils involved in the project will be sharing the whole phases of the construction of the drifters, describing their main characteristics and applications in monitoring marine litter in the upper Tyrrhenian Sea.

Swim2022 contest

In 2021 in 2.5 months SWIM Lebanon generated cleaned the lebanese coast from south to North in a swim along clean along mode: while athletes were swimming approx 5km/event along the seashore, their families and friends were cleaning the adjacent coastline only to meet at the end of the swim to celebrate the achievement of both. In2022, we decided to have 20 teams choosing each their own section to clean end of spring, but they would remain owners of it for 3 months thereafter to prove that the area remaibed sustainably clean. This is a competition with a jury who evaluate the teams based on 12 criteria, ranging from their performance on awareness, on before and after to sustainability. The winner teams have 15 valuable eco/responsible prizes: 5 mountain bikes, 5 SUPs, and 5 photovoltaic systems of 5A each!

Raising awareness on how blue Europe is: the OCEAN Exhibition

This 45-minutes conference will be the opportunity to present the OCEAN exhibition, a project of the Ocean & Climate Platform in partnership with Mercator Ocean International, which participates to strengthening ocean literacy of European citizens. This exhibition aims at raising awareness on how blue Europe is by presenting Europe’s maritime heritage and the importance of protecting the ocean. Through story-telling and exceptional visuals, OCEAN is a perfect tool to strengthen ocean knowledge of the public.

Counting 66 000km of coastline where 40% of its population lives, Europe is without a doubt a maritime continent. More specifically, the European union has the largest maritime zone in the world, with 18 million square kilometres, giving to its members states and their citizens the great responsibility to sustainably manage and protect this unique heritage and more globally, the ocean. To raise awareness on the matter, the Ocean & Climate Platform, with the support of the French Ministry of the sea, launched the OCEAN exhibition in 2022 to revive European citizens’ attachment to our common maritime heritage. This event is also an official event of the French presidency of the European union. Participants will assist to an exclusive online viewing of the exhibition’s movie, “The beating heart of the ocean”, in which 11 European citizens share their love for the ocean. Viewers will learn from a French photographer, a Portuguese surfer, an Irish fisherman, or even a Spanish Navy Captain. They share with the audience how they feel connected to the ocean and why we need to protect this unique ecosystem. A 30-minute discussion will follow during which 3 speakers, respectively from the Ocean & Climate Platform, Mercator Ocean International, and a representative of youth involvement, will share their experience as advocating organisation, oceanography expert, and actor of the change of tomorrow.

Claddagh Kids Talk: The Ocean

How can a starfish even live if it doesn’t have a heart, a brain or blood? And is really a dogfish half dog and half fish? The students of the 5th class at Claddagh National School in Galway (Ireland) have learned a lot about their favourite marine creatures and are ready to answer all the questions of their curious teacher Seán. There are so many adults like Seán out there who don’t know half of the interesting facts about marine life in Ireland and beyond that the kids in Claddagh National School have learned, so this light-hearted yet really informative podcast aims at giving everybody the opportunity to learn about the most interesting facts about basking sharks and humpback whales, as well as the dangers they incur because of climate change, from the very voices of some of the youngest ocean experts around.

As part of their participation in the Marine Institute's Explorers Education Programme, 5th Class at Claddagh National School in Galway researched and recorded their own podcast about all things oceanic. Supported by their class and support teacher, the children worked individually or in small groups to research and present a short interview-style report on a marine-themed topic of their choice. After research and preparation of material, the children rehearsed their interviews producing this really engaging podcast that was recorded in the school's sound recording studio and hosted by the class teacher Seán Leonard. The podcast is now available on podcast hosting services like Spotify and Buzzsprout. The podcast has been created as part of the work carried out by Claddagh National School in collaboration with the Explorers Education Programme Officers at Galway Atlantaquaria. Funded by the Marine Institute, the state agency for marine research and development in Ireland, the Explorers Education Programme delivers ocean literacy to primary schools across Ireland. Claddagh National School is involved in the Explorers ‘We Are Ocean Champions’ module, which provides teachers and children with the tools to develop their own collaborative school project with the aim of inspiring the children themselves to become marine leaders and ocean champions.

Amhráin na Mara – Songs of the Sea

Original songs written by a band of non-professional musicians based in Galway, Ireland to raise awareness about Ocean action and conservation.

The project ‘Amhráin na Mara’ (which is the Irish for 'Songs of the Sea') was initiated in 2021 when the Irish Ocean Literacy Network member Dr Maria Vittoria Marra, Education and Public Engagement Officer at Galway Atlantaquaria (Ireland), proposed to some fellow ukulele players of the local band ‘Galway Ukers’ to write together an original song about the Ocean. The Galway Ukers are non-professional, but very talented musicians, and they accepted with enthusiasm the challenge, so much that not just one song was written: in fact, the band has created over ten original songs about different topics related to the Ocean, from the scourge of marine litter to our own deep and personal relationship with the sea. The first two songs have been accompanied by amateur videos produced by the same 'Galway Ukers' members and can be found on YouTube: the first song is called ‘Pig Fish’, the second one ‘Ocean Love Song’ .

Aquaculture: Myths and Truths

Blue Bioeconomy Collaborative Laboratory presents a campaign to clarify myths about Portuguese and European aquaculture available at https://b2e.pt/oh-no-after-all-its-a-myth/. How many times have we heard that “aquaculture fish is less healthy and has less omega-3 than wild fish”? Or that “farmed fish does not taste as well as wild fish, and that it does not have a ‘sea flavour’? Or even that “aquaculture fish is full of antibiotics and is fed with flours”? These are some examples of myths surrounding farmed fish that the Blue Bioeconomy Collaborative Laboratory (CoLAB B2E) wants to clarify with the “Oh No!” After all, It’s a Myth! campaign. Portugal is the third-largest seafood consumer in the world and the first in the EU, with a consumption of around 60 kgs per capita. However, at the European level, only 10% of seafood consumption comes from EU aquaculture. “National aquaculture has excellent quality, freshness and safety, and many of us have lived for years with myths that perpetuate ideas completely contrary to reality. Portuguese aquaculture products are very healthy and nutritious, produced in a sustainable way, using environmentally friendly processes and promote animal welfare”, reveals CoLAB B2E Technical-Scientific Coordinator, Elisabete Matos.

Meet the Sea Ranger Service

Our main objective for this event would be to introduce people to the Sea Ranger Service, our mission and our work. Aside from trying to collaborate with governments, one of our biggest objectives is to make people aware of the Sea Rangers and the unique service that we provide. Our mission is to restore 1 million hectares of ocean biodiversity by 2040 whilst training 20,000 young people towards a maritime career. Meet the Sea Ranger Service will be an online event, a video Q&A with a few of our on duty Sea Rangers, who will be able to explain our mission in a practical sense; how they go about their environmental work, their training, and what life is like on board. Student campaigns for plastic litter and microplastics

Objective of the event is to create awareness of young school children on the effects of plastic litter and micro-plastics on the marine environment through knowledge transfer, hands-on experiments and beach cleaning events.

Beach cleaning campaigns will be organised for primary school students in Heraklion (Crete, Greece) during the period May-June 2022. The campaigns will be accompanied by a lecture about marine plastic pollution and a series of educational activities and games. Hands-on experiments will be organised in the class and on the field in order to present the effects of marine pollution and the presence of the invisible micro-plastics in the marine environment. Activities are performed within the framework of the H2020 project NAUTILOS.

Тhe Black sea - our home - past, present and future

For the European Maritime Day 2022 in Bulgaria we will organize 3 day events. It will take place in Ahtopol, a city whose history, economy and cultural development is connected with the sea. The southern seaside town is located on a small rocky peninsula. The initiative is aimed at young people - children, schoolchildren, students and young people. They will be presented with ideas and measures related to the blue economy, we will focus their attention on how and why they need to be active participants in the processes of marine conservation, protection of marine life and development of fisheries. After the end of our event, in Ahtopol will be held autumn festivals of fish, authentic food, traditional and contemporary arts. The two events will achieve a synergistic effect that will contribute to the economic stabilization of the region and will help unlock the potential of the blue economy, to ensure sustainable economic growth.

Challenges facing local authorities and fishermen's organizations for the development of the blue economy

Conducting a one-day conference with the participation of fisheries organizations, representatives of businesses related to the sea such as tourism, production of seafood, representatives of local and state organizations, scientific organizations. The event will take place on August 30 in hybrid form. The topics to be discussed are related to the current legislation in Bulgaria, which will stimulate and create opportunities for sustainable economic growth in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Museum and Aquarium visit

Students will visit an old house, from the Black Sea Coastal side and will.be able to get acquainted with maritime cultural heritage. Afterwards they will visit the aquarium in Tulcea where they will be familiarized with the life.of the Danube Delta and Black Sea biodiversity. The trip will.culminate with dinner at Histria Cherhana Restaurant, near Histria Citadel, where they will be served fish- based dishes.

Because “Venice is our Pavilion”. To the city and from the city, to see the invisible layers of climate change in the city of water and beauty. The spontaneous answer to the question how will we live together, starting from the awareness of the hidden climate data we live within. - Make Med Ports Blue: At the interface between land and the sea, and as the hubs for these exchanges, ports and harbours have a key role in contributing to the sustainable management of both the marine space and the coastal hinterland. This exhibition allows Mediterranean residents to share their vision on how ports/harbours affect their cultural and natural environment, and on how ports/harbours can play a leading role in maintaining a healthy and clean Mediterranean Sea!

Tackling microplastics pollution: can biodegradable textile and coating be a solution?

Microplastic pollutions is becoming one of the world’s environmental main concerns, since is widespread in the environment threatening human health and biodiversity. The European Green Deal (EGD), the new Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP) and the EU Plastics Strategy announce measures to tackle pollution from microplastics that are intentionally added or unintentionally released into the environment (from e.g. synthetic textiles). According to the EU Action Plan 'Towards Zero Pollution for Air, Water and Soil' states that by 2030 the EU should reduce plastic litter at sea by 50% and microplastics by 30% . The Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters” ambition is to meet these objectives and targets to restore the health of the EU’s ocean and waters by 2030. To respond to these challenges, there is an urgent need to explore innovative solutions to address microplastic pollution. Biodegradable plastics can play a role in reducing the accumulation of microplastics in the environment, especially for applications where it is difficult or expensive to remove it from the environment, but, according to the SAPEA Group of Chief Scientific Advisors “biodegradable plastics are not a ‘silver bullet’ to solve the problem of plastic pollution”, since they also present certain challenges. Aquarium visit

We intend to visit an old cottage representative of the coastal area and analyze the sustainable elements that can be borrowed by modern buildings. Then the voyage takes us to Tulcea Aquarium Centre to discover the richness of marine life, followed by lunch at Histria Restaurant, a fish- based restaurant near the premises of Histria Citadel. Elevii vor vizita Muzeul de științe ale naturii Răsvan Angheluță din Galați, pentru familiarizarea cu diversitatea mediului acvatic. Vor recunoaște animalele marine, regiunile unde trăiesc, vor observa câteva caracteristici. Pot realiza desene cu animalele marine și organiza o expoziție. Apoi, vor merge cu bărcile pe Dunăre într-o întrecere. Activitatea se va încheia cu o plimbare pe faleza Dunării, cu observarea arealului.

The Black sea - our home - past, present and future

For the European Maritime Day 2022 in Bulgaria we will organize 3 - day events.

It will take place in Ahtopol on 16-19 September 2022.

The initiative is aimed at young people - children, schoolchildren, students and young people. They will be presented with ideas and measures related to the blue economy, we will focus their attention on how and why they need to be active participants in the processes of marine conservation, protection of marine life and development of fisheries.
