Description
About
The Blue Thread initiative, led by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, is a newly launched network of individuals, organizations and businesses who are committed to advancing ocean literacy and sustainable ocean stewardship worldwide. This initiative has in many ways been inspired by the work of the EU4Ocean Coalition, and seeks to expand its impact by extending its reach beyond Europe to the rest of the world.
While EU4Ocean has been instrumental in connecting ocean literacy practitioners across Europe, the Blue Thread serves as a sister project on a global scale. It invites participation from all continents, creating opportunities for collaboration that transcend regional boundaries. The network which the Blue Thread seeks to form is aligned with the principles of the Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy in Action, uniting those who elevate awareness of ocean health, support innovation in marine education, and foster inclusive, equitable participation in ocean-related initiatives.
Key Aspects of the Blue Thread Initiative
- Global Collaboration: The Blue Thread connects a diverse network of ocean advocates to share knowledge and best practices, working collectively to address marine challenges.
- Commitment Recognition: Members who join the network can display the Blue Thread logo, a symbol of dedication to ocean literacy and environmental sustainability.
- Policy and Education Advocacy: The initiative will amplify the role of ocean literacy in shaping international policies and support impactful educational programs that advance sustainable ocean economies.
Practical Information
The Blue Thread is an invaluable opportunity for those involved in ocean literacy, whether regionally or internationally, to broaden the scope of their work and contribute to a truly global conversation about our shared responsibility for ocean stewardship.
