Welcome to a transformative journey of discovery with the Ocean Literacy Brief Series, an initiative proudly launched by the EU4Ocean Coalition. Supported by the European Commission, this series is a dynamic endeavour to fortify ocean literacy throughout Europe and beyond.

About EU4Ocean

Launched in 2019 with support from the European Commission, DG MARE, to strengthen ocean literacy in Europe, the EU4Ocean coalition supports and facilitates collective ocean literacy (OL) activities that mobilise members of its three communities, namely the EU4Ocean Platform, the Youth4Ocean Forum and the Network of European Blue Schools.  Supported by the coalition’s secretariat and steered by its challenge of the year, coalition members (see diagram):

  • Share and learn from experiences
  • Get support to translate ideas into actions
  • Gain visibility and contribute to the Ocean Literacy movement
  • Bring Ocean Literacy up the EU Policy agenda

What is the role of the Ocean Literacy Briefs?

Our EU4Ocean Ocean Literacy (OL) brief series aims at sharing results and recommendations emerging from the OL experiences, collective work and events organised with, and by, coalition members. Complementing its social media posts and publications on the European Maritime Forum web pages, the series plays the role of voices of the EU4Ocean coalition bringing the OL debate to wider audiences and to the attention of key EU ocean players.

The Ocean Literacy Briefs:

  • Represent only the tip of the iceberg of OL experiences and conversations taking place in the EU, yet we hope they can spark your interest in learning more about ocean literacy in Europe;
  • Do not represent consolidated views of all EU4Ocean Coalition members, but synthesise results and key messages developed by the Coalition’s secretariat on the basis of many contributions - hoping that these will steer reactions and debates, bringing ocean literacy up the agenda and attention of many.

OL briefs will be published every quarter! Read our first two instalments here:
