A new publication report examines sustainable algae products – both microalgae and seaweed – with high potential for market uptake by industry and consumers. It identifies major knowledge gaps affecting market readiness, data availability, and environmental assessment capabilities across algae value chains.
Advancing Knowledge on Sustainable Algae Products and Environmental Performance
The publication report “Verification of Sustainable Microalgae & Seaweed Products with High Market Potential and Available Criteria & Tools Assessing Their Environmental Performance” – developed by s.Pro - sustainable projects GmbH – is now available via the European Union’s Publications Office.
This report expands the EU4Algae knowledge base by reviewing the current state of algae markets, pinpointing barriers to consumer access and awareness, and evaluating existing tools used to assess the environmental performance of algae-based products and services.
The report complements other EU4Algae reports, including:
- Developing a Monitoring Framework to Assess Bioremediation Offered by Algae in Europe
- Business Case and Project Recommendations on the Development of Regenerative Ocean Farming as a Bioremediation Measure in Europe
Targeted at the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE), other European Commission services (including Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV), Directorate-General Research and Innovation (DG RTD), Directorate General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW), and Joint Research Centre (JRC)), as well as researchers, public bodies, and industry stakeholders, this report delivers insights crucial to advancing sustainable algae markets and value chains.
Introducing the Report
The publication report “Verification of Sustainable Microalgae & Seaweed Products with High Market Potential and Available Criteria & Tools Assessing their Environmental Performance” presents an in-depth analysis of algae products with high market potential and highlights several key challenges:
- Algae biodiversity is extremely broad – with an estimated 30,000 to 1,000,000 species – yet only a small share is currently commercialised.
- Most algae markets remain pre-mature, with consumers often unable to differentiate European from Asian products and facing limited access to algae-based goods.
- Market outlook data, particularly for microalgae, remain scarce or unavailable, including projections to 2030.
- Production and consumption data at species level are difficult to access, hindering efforts to verify sustainable value chains.
These findings reveal significant knowledge gaps that must be addressed to support the sector’s sustainable growth.
The report also provides a critical review of environmental assessment tools — including life-cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies, standards, and labelling systems — and their applicability to algae products and services. This work is especially timely as the upcoming Green Claims Directive (GCD) and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) are expected to introduce new compliance obligations within the next 3–5 years, requiring companies to substantiate environmental claims.
However, this report notes that existing LCA tools, such as the EU Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) and relevant ISO methodologies do not yet sufficiently cover algae-specific scenarios, particularly those linked to seaweed cultivation in marine environments, circular value chains, or biorefining. This gap poses risks for environmental verification, consumer trust, and the development of emerging algae markets.
Beyond environmental metrics, the report also examines sustainability from economic, social, and governance perspectives, calling for methods that account not only for minimising environmental harm but also recognising positive ecosystem services provided by algae value chains.
Objectives of the Report
The primary objective of the publication report “Verification of Sustainable Microalgae & Seaweed Products with High Market Potential and Available Criteria & Tools Assessing their Environmental Performance” is to identify algae products with strong market potential and to verify suitable criteria, labels, and assessment tools – including LCAs – that can assess the environmental footprint of algae products and services.
The sub-tasks include:
- Assessing characteristics of algae and algae-derived products that support consumer acceptance and industrial demand.
- Identifying and confirming assessment tools and indicators suitable for evaluating algae products in relation to environmental, climate, and biodiversity challenges.
Conclusions and Key Recommendations
Based on the study’s findings, 14 recommendations were developed to improve governance, strengthen the business environment, close research gaps, and enhance consumer awareness. Key actions include:
- Verifying the environmental performance of algae value chains, including ecosystem services.
- Accelerating algae biomass production and use by aligning needs for specific species and their properties.
- Protecting and enhancing algae’s legitimacy as a sustainable resource.
- Raising awareness and responding to consumer preferences and trends related to algae products.
These recommendations aim to create a safe, credible, and sustainable framework that supports the long-term development of the European algae sector.
Why This Report Matters
By addressing knowledge gaps related to markets, sustainability assessment, and data availability, this publication strengthens the foundation for evidence-based policymaking and supports the EU’s ambitions for a sustainable blue economy.
The findings provide guidance for industry, researchers, and policymakers as they navigate new regulatory expectations under the GCD and CSRD, while highlighting the urgency of developing algae-specific environmental assessment tools.
