Back on 24 September 2024, Notpla celebrated a major milestone that helped propel its mission forward: it successfully closed a Series A+ funding round, securing an unprecedented £20 million (~€23 million) in equity fundraising to support the transition towards plastic-free materials.

A Vote of Confidence for Seaweed-Based Innovation

The funding round was led by UB Forest Industry Green Growth Fund, with participation from both new and existing investors. Among them is Catalytic Capital for Climate & Health (C3H), an impact-first vehicle by Temasek Trust.

Ryan Tan, Director at C3H, highlighted the strategic alignment between Notpla’s business model and the fund’s impact objectives, noting the company’s strong customer traction, product innovation and growing environmental footprint reduction. He also referenced Notpla’s continued progress since winning The Earthshot Prize, of which Temasek Trust is a Founding Partner.

The investment comes at a pivotal moment for sustainable materials, as industries worldwide accelerate the shift away from fossil-fuel-based plastics.

Goals for Global Impact

The new capital will support Notpla’s expansion into markets where plastic-free solutions are in high demand, particularly North America, where its materials are already gaining traction.

Crucially, the funding will accelerate the development of next-generation seaweed-based packaging solutions and enhance material performance. Notpla aims to enable the replacement of over 100 million single-use plastic items annually within the next two years – building on the 16 million already replaced to date.

David Walker, Senior Partner at UB Forest Industry Green Growth Fund, emphasised that Notpla’s use of seaweed as a renewable resource represents a groundbreaking shift away from conventional single-use plastics. The investment aligns with the fund’s mission to drive green growth and promote sustainable practices across industries.

Expanding Across the Atlantic

As part of its growth strategy, Notpla is strengthening its presence in the North American market. Stephen Feline, Director of North America at London & Partners, described the company as a strong example of sustainability-driven innovation emerging from London and highlighted the importance of transatlantic collaboration in addressing the climate crisis.

A Milestone for Mission-Driven Innovation

Notpla Co-Founder and Co-CEO Rodrigo García González described the funding round as both a validation of the company’s approach and an opportunity to capitalise on the growing global demand for genuinely plastic-free packaging solutions.

Co-Founder and Co-CEO Pierre Paslier added that the investment will accelerate growth and enable Notpla to continue leading the market in sustainable innovation.

Future Outlook

As Notpla enters this new phase of expansion, the company remains committed to advancing seaweed-based materials that help eliminate plastic waste and reduce environmental harm.

By scaling natural alternatives and strengthening international partnerships, Notpla is contributing to a broader transformation in packaging systems – demonstrating how algae and marine biomass can play a pivotal role in building a circular and climate-resilient blue economy.
