Algae Farmers' Toolkit

Developed under the EU Algae Initiative, this toolkit brings together the essential resources to support algae cultivation across Europe.
A set (kit) of resources (tools) for both algae farmers and policymakers to navigate abstract issues of national legislation, site and species selection, funding, licensing and monitoring, as well as production and processing methods, product development, sales & marketing, business networking and so on — designed to help align national practices with Europe’s growing algae ambitions.
Explore the different toolkit components and find resources related to educational courses, licensing, funding, forums and business planning resources. Use the submenu to explore all toolkit components — your complete “one-stop shop” for algae cultivation in the EU.

Farm Design Tool

Algae are a diverse group of primarily aquatic, photosynthetic organisms that produce their own food using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water, much like plants. They range from single-celled microalgae (like phytoplankton) to complex, multicellular forms such as seaweed. Algae are crucial to aquatic ecosystems, forming the base of the food web and generating a significant portion of Earth's atmospheric oxygen through photosynthesis.

While terrestrial crops have been cultivated and domesticated for over 10.000 years, algae are a relatively new addition to the portfolio of cultivated crops, especially in Europe. Since algae are so diverse, farms come in all shapes and sizes, with no one single way of farming. Farms can be micro-scale, growing small amounts of high-value species for specific applications, or large-scale, with a focus on high volumes of biomass for multiple applications. They can be on land in urban, rural or coastal areas, or at sea in near- or offshore locations.

The EU4Algae farm design tool is a synthesis of resources to help algae farmers plan their own algae farm, whether it’s just starting out at lab scale, or upscaling to commercial, offshore macroalgae farm.

The farm design tool is intended to help algae farmers work out what they need to get started, where they can place their farm and how to develop a business plan, drawing on existing tools and results from past and ongoing algae projects.

Use the submenu on this page to navigate the farm design tool and find resources related to licensing, sea basins, land-based farming, existing tools, business design guide and algae knowledge base.

In summary, the purpose of the algae farmers’ toolkit is to boost European algae innovation, giving all EU citizens access to information, tools and resources to make algae part of our everyday lives.

Projects & Calls

Projects are a great way to further research and innovation agendas in a collaborative approach. There are many public and private funding programmes which regularly launch calls for project proposals where algae can play a role.

The European Commission’s Funding & Tenders portal is regularly updated with calls and can be accessed via the link below:

To find past and ongoing projects on the topic of algae, EU4lgae has developed a project database of algae projects funded at the European level since the 1980s. You can browse and filter the database via the link below:

Additionally, CINEA recently published a report on the last 10 years of algae innovation, which can be accessed here

E-Learning & Academic Courses

E-learning is a type of online distance learning that uses the Internet and new digital technologies to enhance learning processes. This type of teaching lets learners train remotely at whatever time is convenient for them, with access to a huge variety of educational content on a 24/7 basis and from any location.

There are a growing number of online courses available about algae. The EU4Algae Support Database is a living database of resources related to algae.

Below you can jump to the Support Database with a pre-filtered list of e-learning courses currently available. This database can be used to browse courses and find the one that’s right for you.

New courses will be added to the database as and when they become available and expired courses will be removed periodically.

SUPPORT DATABASE

An academic course is a formal, structured unit of study, typically offered at a postsecondary institution like a college or university, that focuses on a specific subject or topic to meet educational requirements and grant academic credit toward a degree or other award. These courses involve intellectual engagement, often requiring significant individual study time and form the building blocks of an academic program of studies.

Algae are generally core elements of academic courses in the natural sciences, particularly biology and environmental sciences.

Farmers' Forums

Algae farmers come in all shapes and sizes, reflecting the broad spectrum of over 50.000 algae species known to science, with many more yet to be discovered.

Networking is an important part of algae farming, in order to find collaborators, seek advice or help with licensing or business planning.

A forum is defined as a meeting place or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged, either online or in person.

The EU4Algae Support Database is a living database of resources related to algae. As the main European stakeholder platform for algae, EU4Algae has mapped existing forums on the topic of algae and added them to the Support Database. A pre-filtered list of farmers’ forums can be found via the link below:
