Three successful years, now looking forward to the future
The meeting featured a closed session for EU4Algae members, partners, and the Advisory Board, focusing on the project's progress and accomplishments from 2022 to 2024.
Since its inception, EU4Algae has shifted the perception of algae, and the platform continues to drive progress in the industry. Media interest in algae’s potential to revolutionise health, innovative applications, and sustainability is growing.
EU4Algae members, partners, and the Advisory Board, had the opportunity to discuss:
- Key milestones achieved under the EU Algae Initiative from 2022 to 2024, highlighting its impact on policy, research, and market development.
- Upcoming funding opportunities emphasising the importance of continued innovation and collaboration to expand the sector’s reach.
EU4Algae has been a great success so far. The participants of the event highlighted how the Working Groups were pivotal in meeting the goals of the initiative. Deniz Ficicioglu, co-Founder at BettaF!sh, emphasized, “The EU Algae Initiative has helped tackle key barriers such as novel food regulations and has introduced new species, fostering growth in the industry. In particular, EU4Algae’s collaboration with its Working Groups is crucial for seaweed research and for prioritising areas of future development in the algae industry.”
During the meeting, EU4Algae members were interviewed about the importance of the European Commission's 23 actions under the under the EU Algae Initiative towards a strong and sustainable EU algae sector and how these efforts have addressed key barriers in the algae industry.
Amid the meeting's activities, EU4Algae members shared a few words about how the initiative has positively impacted the European algae sector.
Ronan Pierre, Department Manager for Innovation & Products at CEVA, noted, “EU4Algae aligns with the Commission’s actions under the EU Algae Initiative, and it’s valuable to have direct contact with key Commission representatives. This platform brings algae stakeholders together, enabling us to raise our voices and collaborate on common practices to support the algae sector.”
Hywel Griffiths, Chief Scientist at Fermentalg, shared his excitement for the future: “As EU4Algae continues to focus on key development areas for the industry, I’m eager to see how the platform and its community will continue pushing the sector forward.”
Fostering connections, sparking creativity, and sharing insights
An engaging algae-tasting session and an artistic activity with algae-based pigments where participants could unleash their inner artists fostered stronger community connections while celebrating the versatility and potential of algae.
Paving the way forward
The afternoon panel discussion explored the future of Europe’s algae sector, focusing on sustainability, innovation, collaboration, and addressing industry gaps. The panellists offered a balanced mix of optimism and pragmatism. Representing both micro and macro algae sectors, the discussion centred on the critical steps needed to drive the industry forward and unlock its full potential.
The event wasn’t just about reflecting on the past; it was about charting the path forward. Adrien Vincent from EU4Algae’s Advisory Board outlined some of the new opportunities for scaling impact, for example, expanding community reach, and thematic webinars, among others, for continued collaboration as of 2025.
The day closed with heartfelt thanks to the stakeholders, partners, and facilitators who contributed to the project’s journey. Participants left with renewed enthusiasm, inspired by EU4Algae’s accomplishments and eager for the opportunities that lie ahead next year.
“The EU4Algae project highlights how the algae sector in Europe has evolved, with support from the European Commission playing a key role. Increased investments in algae research and studies over the past few years signal a promising future for collaboration and innovation in the algae industry”, stated Maris Stulgis, Policy Officer for Blue Bioeconomy, Algae, and Aquaculture at the Commission's Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE).
“As we approach the end of the year and take a look at what’s been achieved so far in the project, we celebrate the creation of a vibrant EU algae community. We’re already looking ahead to the next phase, where we’ll continue growing together with the EU algae sector,” said Julie Peris, Project Advisor at the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).
