Pescatourism, or fisheries tourism, is often quoted as one of the main opportunities when considering diversification of economic activities in European fisheries areas.

Governance and policy in fisheries areas

Past evaluations have shown that one of the main advantages of local development programmes, like LEADER and Axis 4, is that they help to provide relatively fragmented communities with an organisational platform, a voice and a channel of communication to those areas of government and policy that affect their future.

"Material" and "Immaterial" investment in fisheries areas

This page deals with how Fisheries Local Action Groups can create both the physical and the human conditions required for sustainable development in their areas. In other words, it looks at the links between fisheries and the three main pillars of sustainable development.

Additional and alternative activities

“Support for diversification” is the second objective mentioned in Axis 4 for the sustainable development of fisheries areas (Article 43.2b). It generally involves working to improve the linkages between fisheries and other economic sectors rather than linkages within the fisheries supply chain as in the previous section.

Innovative solutions to be developed in fisheries areas

One of the four main aims of Axis 4 is to “add value to fisheries and aquaculture products” (Article 43.2a). In fact, the weight of fisheries organisations on many Fisheries Local Action Groups has meant that the measure for adding value to fisheries products (Article 44.1d) has become one of the most important parts of local strategies.
