Size of blue economy

The blue economy covers activities that are related to the seas and oceans. It is hard to estimate its size:

  1. not everything at the coast is related to the blue economy
  2. not all of the blue economy is at the coast
  3. traditional classification of industries such as tourism or energy generation do not distinguish between what is marine or maritime and what is not
  4. in many maritime sectors such as oil and gas exploration, most of the employment is generated by equipment suppliers and other upstream activities rather than by the industry itself

Nevertheless, it is clear that  the maritime economy is a significant and strategic industry for the EU and has the potential to grow even further. A number of studies have therefore aimed to capture its current extent and growth rate.

Simple purchasing decisions taken at the supermarket and online clicks matter greatly. Businesses spend vast amounts to understand their customers’ preferences in order to tailor products and services accordingly. Observation shows that sustainable options will rise on the market if there is demand for it.
