Each EMODnet action gathers a partnership into a thematic assembly group. There are groups for bathymetry, geology, biology, chemistry, physics, habitats and human activity. Each group aims to gather to relevant marine measurements within at least two sea–basins, to provide each measurement with comparable descriptors or metadata such as time and place of measurement and quality of measurement. These data are then processed into contiguous data layers over the whole sea basin. In addition maps are being prepared indicating where there are observations, where there are observations but the observations are not available and where the observations are missing. It is intended that all data and map layers be freely available.
