On 16 June, 2015 a contract was signed between the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and a consortium led by ARCADIS Nederland BV. The consortium will see whether we have the right set of marine data in the Arctic. They will do this by undertaking a number of practical challenges – simulating an oil spill, checking whether marine protected areas make up a coherent set, siting a wind farm, estimating the impact of invasive species or checking how temperature, ice-cover and fish catches have changed over the years. This will enable gaps to be identified, priorities for monitoring to be determined and the current availability and fitness for use of current data to be evaluated.
This follows a similar exercise in the North Sea and Mediterranean and will be followed up by efforts in the Atlantic, Baltic and Black Sea.
