The EMODnet Data Ingestion project will be undertaken by a European network of 44 organisations (governmental departments, marine research institutes and SMEs) from 29 coastal countries. It wlil be coordinated by Mariene Informatie Service ‘MARIS’ BV (MARIS) and Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR)
The aim of this contract is to streamline the data ingestion process so that data holders from public and private sectors can easily release their data for safekeeping and subsequent distribution through EMODnet or other processes. It will provide a service for those public and private entities, including international and regional organisations, who wish to share their data but are unable to do so. It should be intuitive and easy to use. It will build on available work and cooperate with existing institutions working on such issues. The need for this particular action on data ingestion was outlined in the "roadmap for marine knowledge 2020" Further insights into the difficulties of the present process were gained ina workshop on 26 June 2014. This work will follow the timetable set out in the roadmap,
It will contribute to increasing productivity of those working on marine issues, stimulating innovation in the blue economy and reducing uncertainty in our knowledge of the behaviour of the sea by increasing the accessibility and interoperability of marine data as set out by the Commission in 2010 It is part of the EU's digital agenda and will be an essential contribution to the data and information sharing provisions in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive
