Discover what’s behind EU4Algae Working Group 5: Algae4Eco
Working group 5 Algae4Eco will promote algae services (as products) by improving the business environment and cooperation across the algae ecosystem service-related value chains. Also, the group will promote the development of pilot/demonstration facilities and success stories for nutrients and energy recovery in the context of pollution prevention and waste treatment, develop roadmaps to accelerate innovation and define R&D needs for ecosystem services of algae.
The following activities and outcomes are foreseen:
- Develop a knowledge hub on the bioremediation potential of algae;
- Integrate knowledge considering mappings of the carrying capacities of EU (coastal) waters for seaweed aquaculture and marine permaculture;
- Integrate knowledge on impacts of algae cultivation on the health of the ocean and humans;
- Report based on the identification of regulatory barriers in taking up ecosystem services;
- Develop factsheets on state of play of and innovation roadmaps for algae bioremediation and ecosystem services;
- Framework for quantifying ecosystem services, including monitoring, good practices, business models and scalability.
