The Centre for Feed Innovation (CFI) has launched its 2025 State of the Industry Report on Algal Oil, marking the first publication in a four-part series exploring how novel feed ingredients can help reduce aquaculture’s dependence on fishmeal and fish oil. The report provides a comprehensive overview of how algal oil is shaping the future of sustainable aquaculture across four key dimensions: nutrition, scalability, sustainability, and safety.
Securing Aquaculture’s Future Through Nutrition
The report highlights robust feeding trials demonstrating that algal oil can fully replace fish oil in aquaculture diets without compromising fish growth, omega-3 retention, or overall product quality. These findings reaffirm algal oil’s role as a nutritionally reliable alternative that supports healthy and high-quality seafood production.
Scaling Up to Meet Global Demand
According to the report, global EPA+DHA output from algal oil is expected to increase by 80% by 2030. This rapid growth is driven by expanding production capacity across both fermentation and phototrophic cultivation systems, positioning algal oil as a scalable solution capable of meeting the needs of a growing aquaculture sector.
A Sustainable Pathway for Feed Innovation
Lifecycle analyses presented in the report show that algal oil can reduce greenhouse gas intensity by up to 30% compared with traditional fish oil. Additionally, widespread adoption of algal oil has the potential to spare millions of tonnes of wild fish from harvest — supporting ocean conservation efforts while ensuring a stable supply of omega-3s.
Ensuring Safety, Consistency, and Reliability
The report also underscores the strong regulatory foundation behind algal oil. With well-established safety data and consistent production standards, algal oil is now considered one of the most rigorously assessed and dependable novel feed ingredients available for commercial use.
