Ebis Algae, a Japan-based research institute, is pioneering the use of microalgae as a sustainable food source in school meals. With the rising concerns over food security and environmental sustainability, Ebis Algae is working to make nutrient-rich algae, specifically from the Nannochloropsis genus, a regular part of children’s diets. These microalgae are not only high in protein but also contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a valuable omega-3 fatty acid that supports heart health.

To introduce this concept, Ebis Algae launched the "Green School Lunch" program, providing over 9,000 meals across 28 schools in Fukuroi City. Despite initial concerns about children's reactions to eating algae, the program turned out to be a success. Many students enjoyed the meals and even asked for more, demonstrating that algae can be both nutritious and appealing.

The success of the program has led to the permanent inclusion of algae-based foods in Fukuroi's school menus. Encouraged by this outcome Ebis Algae is now working to expand this initiative across Japan, increasing its production of Nannochloropsis. With algae offering a sustainable, protein-packed alternative, the institute aims to make it a staple food for the future.
